Melbourne's Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) are the biggest winners in the latest round of infrastructure grants awarded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

WEHI will receive over $6 million and the QIMR $3.5 million under the NHMRC's Independent Research Institute Infrastructure Support Scheme (IRIIS), announced today.

The scheme is aimed at supporting the indirect costs of maintaining research and researchers and is used for non-capital support services such as lab staff, libraries, computer services and equipment maintenance.

Other winners include Melbourne's Baker Heart Research Institute with $2.7 million, Sydney's Garvan Institute ($2.7m), the Murdoch Children's ($2.6m) and Prince Henry's ($1.1m), both in Melbourne.

Victorian institutes received the bulk of the funding, with 14 institutes granted, while NSW got five and Queensland three.
