Luckless Giant Stephen Coniglio shattered after suffering a ‘brutal’ concussion during clash against Richmond

Greater Western Sydney veteran Stephen Coniglio has suffered a concussion after a “brutal” blow during Sunday’s clash against Richmond.

Late in the second term, Coniglio attempted to smother a kick from Sam Banks but was collected flush on the side of the head by the Tiger’s lower leg.

Coniglio immediately looked shaken before making his way to the bench.

“Yeah that looks brutal doesn’t it,” Joel Selwood said on Channel 7.

“He looked a little bit depleted down here on the bench.

“He headed to the rooms slightly before the other players.”

The 32-year-old sat on the bench for a few minutes before heading down to the race to the rooms just ahead of half-time.

He then underwent an HIA assessment during the long break. But he failed it and was ruled out for the remainder of the match.

Coniglio will also miss next week’s blockbuster derby against Sydney.

It continues a nightmare run on the injury front for the former captain.

He managed just 10 matches last year and 15 the year before, but had been in good form to start 2026 after a near faultless pre-season.

“He’s been one of the shining lights over the first month so hopefully it’s just a little bump for him,” Selwood added.

More to come …
